Why prep matters more than the coating
Epoxy doesn’t just dry on top of concrete like paint. It has to bond into the surface, and concrete straight off the trowel is too smooth and sealed for that to happen. Prep is the work of opening the surface up, cleaning it out, and fixing what’s broken so the coating grabs and stays. Get it right and the floor behaves for 15 to 20 years. Get it wrong and no premium product will save it.
Step one: profile the concrete (grinding, not etching)
The single biggest fork in the road is how the surface gets profiled. The professional method is diamond grinding, running weighted machines with diamond-segment heads across the slab to physically open the pores and level out high spots. The shortcut, common in DIY kits, is acid etching, where you wash the floor with an acid solution and hope it roughs things up enough.

Step two: test for moisture

Step three: repair cracks, pits, and joints
Prep is also when the floor gets fixed. Cracks and spalled areas are chased out and filled, pitting is patched, and control joints are handled so they don’t telegraph through the finish.
